Long-term effects of the carotid artery surgery on visual functions and ocular hemodynamics.

Occlusive stenotic lesions of carotid arteries in 15-46 percent cause ischemic diseases of the eye. It is proved that the main reason for disturbing visual functions in case of ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS) is the pathology of the extracranial segment of internal carotid artery (ICA).

Purpose: to determine the influence of carotid artery surgery on ocular functions and ocular blood flow in patients with OIS in the late postoperative period.

Methods.

140 patients with acute type (90 patients) and chronic type (50 patients) of OIS, who were operated in case with occlusion-stenotic lesions of carotid arteries in the Department of Vascular Surgery.

1. Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity tests.

2.Color Doppler Imaging (CDI):

- the ophthalmic artery (OA);

- the central retinal artery (CRA);

- the short posterior cilliary arteries (PCAs) 3. Assessment of hemodynamic parameters:

- peak systolic velocity (PSV, cm/s);

- end-diastolic velocity (EDV, cm/s);

- resistance index (RI). All examinations were carried out before carotid surgery and in the course of 1–2 years after this.

Conclusions.

There was blood-flow acceleration in orbital arteries and decrease of vasoresistance in the patients with OIS within the late postoperative period following carotid reconstructive surgery.
